While traveling in Greece in the early 1960s, Maija Isola was inspired by the movement of water and depicted it in several fabric prints. Named after the mythological sirens, the Seireeni (siren) pattern also recalls the enchanting singing that lured sailors into dangerous waters.

Founded in 1951 by visionary Finnish textile designer Armi Raitia and her husband, Viljo, Marimekko grew from a small textile-printing firm into an international phenomenon. From its beginnings as a textile design company, Marimekko (meaning “Mary’s dress”) branched out into everything from toys to dinnerware to architecture, becoming something of a lifestyle brand in the 1960s and 70s. The company’s outstanding designers revolutionized modern printed fabrics and fashion. Today the company continues to collaborate with young artists, encouraging experimentation. The result is spirited, non-traditional patterns and vivid colors.
